Arrowroot is an underexploited tuber plant which is currently gaining much commercial importance worldwide. Scientifically known as Maranta arundinaceae, the plant is often dubbed as West Indian arrowroot, Obedience plant, Bermuda arrowroot, etc.

   This tuber crop is a member of marantaceae family. The plant is a native of South America. It was one of the first species of wild crops that is domesticated for food purpose. This rainforest crop with a perennial habitat has been now used in large scale for the production of arrowroot powder widely used in food industry. Like many other crops, the best season to cultivate arrowroots is during rainy season. The main tuber with 3-4 nodes is used as planting material. The suckers from the parent plant can also be used for planting. Soils with good drainage conditions are used for planting.
