First War of Independence, 1857

  This first collective uprising against British imperialism gathered its momentum from the Barakhpur military camp. The cartridges used in their guns had to be bitten off, which the hindu-muslim soldiers refused to even touch, as it was greased using the fat from cattle/pigs. Mangal Pandey, a sepoy, shot a senior officer who forced him to bite the cartridges. Pandey was executed, which set off the revolt. Many Princely States joined the revolt.
